Politics of Openness

Day in and day out,  we are confronted by ‘the other’, especially in times of globalisation. We encounter it disguised as other cultures,  languages,  sexes,  in art,  nature,  as well as in love;  on the micro or macro level, as individuals or identity groups such as nation states.  According to developmental psychology, the other is a prerequisite to create our own identity as a subject. It is a quasi-negative mirror. Only by delimiting myself, by knowing ‘who I am not, ’do I get to know ‘who I am. ’ ‘I’is through the other.
