An Intercultural and Postcolonial Introduction to Philosophy (Seminar)

April 15 @ 6:00 pm - July 1 @ 8:00 pm

Free

Philosophy is typically introduced in one of two ways: through an overview of philosophical history or a categorical approach aimed at providing insight into subjects such as metaphysics and epistemology. However, both approaches often omit non-“Western” philosophies, including Indian, African, Chinese, and other schools of thought, as well as contributions by female philosophers. Other issues – for instance racism and epistemological injustices – are also excluded. This seminar is an attempt to diversify and decolonize the introduction to philosophy, and to critically question the underlying conditions for this exclusion, whether these may be language, categories, politics or other factors.
