SUMMARY:Intercultural Perspectives on Self and Identity - In Conversation with Kwame Anthony Appiah
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to welcome Kwame Anthony Appiah for our last seminar as our guest. Appiah is a prominent philosopher and scholar\, known for his profound contributions to ethics\, political philosophy\, and the philosophy of culture. Born in London to a Ghanaian father and a British mother\, Appiah’s work is deeply informed by his multicultural background. He is best known for his exploration of cosmopolitanism\, a framework that advocates for global citizenship and the ethical responsibilities we have towards people from different cultures and backgrounds. \nHis influential books\, including “Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers” and “The Ethics of Identity\,” address complex issues of identity\, diversity\, and global justice. Appiah’s interdisciplinary approach bridges philosophy with insights from history\, literature\, and social science\, making his work both accessible and impactful. Through his scholarship and public engagement\, he has significantly contributed to contemporary discussions on morality\, culture\, and the global interconnectedness of humanity. \nThe session will be online and open to the public. It consist of two parts. In the first part Lena Schützle and Krisha Kops will be in conversation with Prof. Appiah. We will try to connect Appiah’s work with the findings of our seminar “Ethical Implications of Identity and Self – Perspectives from Intercultural and Feminist Philosophy “. Thereafter Appiah will answer questions from the audience.
